The awfulness of John Humphrys

Tonight’s Question Time is one of the worst I can remember. John Humphrys has an outsize ego. Unlike David Dimbleby he can’t sublimate it. The panellists are there to allow the light of his penetrating intellect dissect them all the more keenly. The audience are there to offer a springboard for him to bore in on his interests, while showing off his nerdish grasp of who said what when in the world of politics.

For the first time ever I was moved to leave a comment on the “have your say” forum, essentially to the effect that they should never have him again.

Okay, he wasn’t helped by a decidedly B-team of panellists, but hey, the man’s still a crashing bore with an outsized ego, and a questioning style that makes the Spanish Inquisition look like a bit of light touch breakfast TV banter on the sofa.

Having watched the clip I’m glad I missed it!
But it’s not just John Humphreys, it’s the whole media who believe they’re there to sneer and be superior all the time, or to infantilise the debate. Intelligent challenge is one thing, automated suspicion is childish and destructive.
