Safari search: why can’t I do it my way?

Google was playing up for a short spell just now when I needed to find something in a hurry. I discovered for the first time that there is no way to choose a different search engine in Safari. (Well, there is a hideous way that involves terminal and re-writing code, but that isn’t a “select the engine you want for the job you want” solution).

Anyway, I popped over to Firefox and used BIng.

But the point is, I ought to be able to choose the tool I want to do the job I want. IE8 makes this easy on Windows, Firefox makes it very easy whatever the platform. Why can’t Safari do the same?

Bad Apple.

In the absence of an Apple-supplied solution, you could use Glims to get multiple search engines from the Safari search field.

Or, of course, you could always just type the search engine’s address into the address bar and search from their web page instead of the toolbar.

Thanks, Chris. I hadn’t come across Glims. I may give it a whirl.
