My first baby

book_cover.jpgI have surprised myself by my reaction to the arrival of my author’s copies of my first book. It is, in every sense of the word a very slight book. It only aspires to offer a distillation of practical guidance for people who lead five minutes or so of prayers in perfectly ordinary congregations. I think this is a worthwhile task, and I hope this book meets a need, but it is hardly ground-breaking or the basis for longevity in print.

Nonetheless I feel absurdly pleased and paternal to hold a copy in my hands. How odd!

Congratulations! How much does it weigh?
I remember when the first edition of “Barcoding – Getting it Right” came out. Although only an anonymous co-author, I felt like I had really added something to the happiness of the world. I suspect yours will add even more.

Congratulations!

Congratulations, Doug. Great to see you calling it your “first” too.

Doug,

Watch out Dan Brown! All modesty aside, it’s nice to have your name in print and who knows, you might even help someone.

Congrats,
-JAK

Congratulations. I felt the same way about my miniscule effort six years ago, now remaindered.

clayboy October 21, 2009 at 16:22

Thank you all you kind people.

@Steve – If I last six years before getting remaindered I shall count it a wonder and a joy :)

Congratulations! A good many authors call their books their babies. And don’t you love the smell of a new book?

David Ker October 21, 2009 at 17:16

Congrats. Can I send my copy to you for a signing?

Is it related to BCP or Celebrating Common Prayer?

clayboy October 21, 2009 at 17:36

David, “Common Worship” is the “brand” name for contemporary official C of E liturgy sort of “son of BCP”, but in English instead of Tudor.

Very nice. I am anxious to get the dissertation done, if not to get my Ph.D. and a job but also to work towards publishing it.

clayboy October 21, 2009 at 17:35

That would be a proper book, and much harder to write, then.

steph October 21, 2009 at 20:17

No, yours is the book to celebrate here Doug. Congratulations! And an attractive wrapper too. It won’t cry (or make you cry any more) or wake you up at night (any more) and it won’t smell of nappies.

Top man, Doug! Many congrats and very well done.

Tim Chesterton October 22, 2009 at 04:15

Congratulations Doug. Mine lasted three years before being remaindered, so I’ll cheer for you if you make six!!!!

Congratulations. I think we should get our PCC to buy a copy for the intercessors.

The first book I’ve edited was published a few months ago. After carting around sheaves of proofs, the book did look and feel a little ‘slight’. And somehow the hard, glossy cover and professionally typeset text made it feel no longer my baby. I’m learning to love it again though.

clayboy October 23, 2009 at 00:06

I would, obviously, be delighted if you bought a copy for each intercessor. On a more serious note, the advice in this book has been tested on real people! ;)

I’m sure, BTW, that your book was a proper one, not a few training notes turned into a typescript.

Can I say how much I really appreciate these expressions of kind congratulations?
