Actually he can’t stand the left regardless of its theological stance. I think his point is that he is smarter about the religious right than liberals are.

Alex Silva is correct – Hitchens really despises the Christian left far more than the Christian right. Which makes sense – he’s a literal-minded person who sees the world in very clear shades of black and white and so its easy for him to understand other literal-minded people who see the world in black and white. It’s just a question of who’s right and who’s wrong. It’s why I’m not a big fan of Hitchens – he’s just as assured of his “rightness” as any American Christian fundamentalist preacher, and usually for reasons that are as equally well thought-out.
