I am always suspicious of chain emails, whatever their topics. The one I received today made me suspicious because of the lack of useful detail.
It purports to be an alert for a three year old girl missing from her home, circulated by Tamworth Police. A very quick investigation (yes, Snopes is your friend) reveals that there is a missing child of that name (Reachelle Marie Smith) and that the attached photo is really of the said girl.
The difference is that the real child went missing in 2006 from her home in North Dakota. The new version is just parasitic. Obviously whoever started it isn’t remotely interested in finding the real missing girl of three years ago – who would obviously look very different now – but just in clogging up the email inboxes of well meaning people thinking they’re actually doing something to help.
If someone else hadn’t effectively trademarked the term, I’d say this was totally depraved.
