A couple of days back, Ruth Gledhill wrote on Tony Blair’s speech to the Royal Society for the Arts:
Last night Tony Blair warned against the “dark side” of religion and said the world’s faith community had issues it must “confront and overcome”. He also said that it was not enough to “tolerate” people of different faiths. Muslims, Jews, Christians and members of all faiths must treat each other as “equal”.
She links on her blog to the whole text of his speech (DOCX format) if you want to read it. Now I happen to think Blair’s speeches tend to seek emotional rather than intellectual agreement, and so are often imprecise just where they need to be precise. I cannot make up my mind whether he is arguing for a respect for other people that goes beyond tolerance, or whether he is saying all faiths have equal truth claims. Or whether he’s worked out that you can do the former without the latter.
