BCE and CE revisited. Honestly, how common is it?

September 30, 2009

Daniel McClellan points to Bob CargilI’s short essay in favour of BCE and CE.
I am one of those who have so far been unpersuaded that BCE and CE provide anything other than a rather deceptive gloss to a fundamentally Christian dating system.
The reason we have our current calendar is due both to a Christian theological [...]

Insults with style: Robert Price on Dominic Crossan

September 30, 2009

Dan Reid runs a trailer for a new IVP book on the historical Jesus, with contributions from Robert Price, John Dominic Crossan, Luke Timothy Johnson, James Dunn and Darrell Bock. That’s an impressively diverse line-up and very unlike the IVP of old.
I confess that I think Price is the only one in the line-up who [...]

A site beyond satire

September 30, 2009

It’s been a while since I blogged about Conservapedia. Today James McGrath has another “read it and weep” post about their latest project.
As with every single entry, it is impossible to tell whether it’s serious or spoofed. I suspect the latter, because it would take a particular bent of conservative mind to come up with [...]

Pre-nups: when conservatives aren’t conservative

September 29, 2009

The UK’s Conservative Party is, at least according to it’s name, meant to be conservative. They also like to claim to be the pro-marriage party.
This makes their latest idea look extremely strange.

Shadow justice minister Henry Bellingham said: “We want to bring in a fairly wide ranging divorce law reform bill and I’m very keen that [...]

Top post of the day

September 29, 2009

I hardly ever do a post of the day. I hardly ever link to sermons and addresses. I hardly ever address issues concerning gay people. Today I turn my back on all those guidelines to tell you about a really good thought-provoking and honest address by an evangelical priest at a celebration of a civil [...]

A Michaelmas question: what about angels?

September 28, 2009

I must confess to feeling a little non-plussed whenever I have to think about angels, as opposed to worshipping with them.
I regularly join them in singing the Sanctus … “Holy, holy, holy”. But I’m never entirely sure whether I think they’re a mythic or poetic way of speaking of the way in which creation is [...]

Science and religion: is it all just “how?” and “why?”

September 28, 2009

John Anderson has a good set of quotations in a post setting out his “modest proposal” on science and religion:

I think it is feasible to speak of each as having a specific role and addressing very specific questions that the other does not. This is an approach that, near as I am aware, is ‘unique’ [...]

NT Wright for Dummies – a ten point bluffer’s guide (seriously)

September 27, 2009

… well, almost completely seriously. Yesterday I posted a quick flippant comment (which I accidentally deleted when I went to edit it!) on Nijay Gupta’s idea of producing an Idiot’s Guide to NT Wright. The speed with which a number of readers took a look at it made me think it might be worth doing [...]

From Anglican arguments to Aaron’s DNA: a weekend round-up

September 26, 2009

A relatively brief round-up. The bibliobloggy stuff is nearer the end. And the most intriguing link is last of all (how biblical!).
First up, finding any fresh perspective on Anglican troubles is unusual. So I was struck by this argument from Peter Carrell commenting (from more-or-less the inside) on the complexities of what evangelicalism means and [...]

Adobe’s lost battle (TM): you know when you’ve been photoshopped

September 25, 2009

Some bizarre guidance on inappropriate use of Adobe’s trademarks:

Trademarks are not verbs.
Correct: The image was enhanced using Adobe® Photoshop® software.
Incorrect: The image was photoshopped.

The trouble is, language is not amenable to trademark legislation. Language hoovers up trademarks, and spits them out.
