SPCK / SSG sacked staff compensated. At last.

I missed yesterday’s press release, and found out about this when the local BBC station contacted me for a comment. The Charity Commission have clearly broken through many of the Brewer brothers’ blustering and bullying delaying tactics.

The press release has an excellent summary of the whole sorry affair. While this comes too late for local manager Steve Jeynes, driven to suicide by it all, it still helps that the company have effectively been forced to admit their owners were a pair of crooks.

The USDAW press release has a masterpiece of wording in the notes for editors. I have glossed this in italics in brackets.

SSGCT was run by two American brothers, Mark and Philip Brewer, who remained based in America. They regarded themselves as being of the Orthodox Christian tradition [other Orthodox disowned them] and quickly began to introduce substantial changes to the culture [friendly to vicious], religious [Christian to sectarian] and business [honest to deceitful] ethos of the shops.

The staff were informed that they had transferred to a charitable company set up by the Brewers, called Saint Stephen the Great LLC, although no company of that name is known to have been registered in Britain or to exist in America. [Liar, liar, pants on fire]

Other blogs reporting on this are the always reliable Phil Groom’s SPCK/SSG blog, and just back from holiday David Keen.
