How to speak Australian

Mike Bird offers some advice on how to talk Australian. (Ignore the shonky bit about “gucci”.) He leaves out the three most useful things you need to know to speak Australian.

  1. End every sentence on a rising intonation, as though you’re asking a question.
  2. The principal Australian adjective is “bloody” – it can be employed in any sentence to add that authentic Strine touch.
  3. Call everybody mate, as in this video.

4. Offer no possibility in words or tone that your statement or opinion might in any manner be erroneous.

I have always found this tendency to be particularly prevalent with Australian sports commentators … of whom I have listened to many in my life as a kiwi :)

I’ve always found the rising intonation a sure sign of an Aussie social worker.
