Communism or islam: whose side aren’t we on?

It seems to me that reporting of the violent uprising / suppression (delete as applicable) in the Xinjiang province is posing our media problems. (The nearest thing to an overview is here.) How do you report something that is in an unpronounceable place where no-one is ever likely to go on holiday, where one seriously bad stereotype is in conflict with another seriously bad stereotype? Good information is hard to come by, and no-one is quite sure which story they really want to tell. Are we against oppressive governments or worried by Muslim insurgents? The news media simply don’t know, and the public aren’t sure they care.

It’s really quite revealing.
